Overview

This unit explores a broad understanding of contemporary approaches to children’s holistic learning, development and care across early childhood education (birth-5 years old). You will utilise contemporary theories to understand children’s learning, social and emotional development and their influence on wellbeing and health in relation to your everyday pedagogical work. Emphasis is given to diversity of children’s learning and development, following a strength-based approach to support newly arrived children, children who speak languages other than English, Aboriginal and Torre Strait Islander children and children with disabilities. You will have the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills to support holistic development, health, physical activity and wellbeing from local, national and international research, curriculum frameworks (Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF); Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF) and policy. Strategies and approaches to support early intervention for children to ensure ongoing health and wellbeing and safety will be considered. You will undertake a personal reflection to investigate new pedagogical perspectives of what holistic child development and care, health and wellbeing means for early childhood education.
