Overview
This unit builds on the understanding developed in EDF5139 Humanities: Geography in secondary years A, to allow you to develop advanced knowledge, skills and capabilities as a specialist geography teacher. It extends your understanding of current trends and approaches in geography education, through a focus on the uses and applications of fieldwork, information and communication technologies (ICTs and AIs), personal geographies, environmental and sustainability education, and civics and citizenship education. You will critically examine school geography drawing on a range of local, national and international perspectives on geography curriculum, resources and assessment, and on learners of diverse backgrounds and abilities. You will also be expected to be able to conduct research to develop your understanding of contemporary geography education priorities and practices.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

respond to current ideas about the scope and purpose of school geography and apply them in your geography classes, e.g. in relation to developing fieldwork, ICTs, geospatial technologies, sustainability, citizenship and personal geographies

plan, resource, teach and assess geography field activities

effectively design geography education lessons that facilitate critical thinking, research, numeracy and literacy skills

demonstrate advanced knowledge of the role of geography both as a separate discipline and as part of an integrated curriculum within both the Victorian and Australian Curriculum.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study.
Usually, you can expect to engage with:
- 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities;
- 2 hours* of fieldwork activities in a bespoke tutorial session to complement and extend the above, and
- the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study
Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with relevant literature and resources. Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding. Additionally, you may also engage in: inquiry-based teaching and learning; peer assisted learning; research activities; role play and simulation or virtual practice.
