Overview

This unit builds on physical education concepts and knowledge from the previous semester. It provides you with a continuing intellectual, theoretical and practical framing inclusive of a critical research agenda in secondary physical education, enabling you to become critically reflective and informed professionals. You will also learn how teachers plan for and undertake educational projects and research as part of their professional work. The focus for this unit is on consolidating your physical education specific professional knowledge and professional practice, while identifying and engaging in professional learning for improved practice and student learning. You will be provided with opportunities, in class and/or via related professional experience (teaching practicums), to consolidate your content knowledge, develop subject matter and pedagogical content knowledge and skills relevant to teaching in secondary schools.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    examine the impact of contemporary issues on policy, curriculum and pedagogy facing physical education and teachers of physical education

    critically reflect and evaluate your teaching experiences in physical education in a school environment.

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:

  • on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement; and
  • 120 hours of self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours

You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with relevant literature and resources. Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding. Additionally, a range of teaching styles will be used in order to cater for diverse learners including: case-based teaching; peer assisted learning; problem-based learning; professional experience; research activities and role play.
