Enrolment rules

Prerequisite: 72 credit points in physical education, including human movement (e.g. anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, growth and motor development, skill acquisition and psycho-social aspects of physical activity), health and nutrition and study in the skill activity areas of fundamental motor skills, ball handling, dance, games, fitness education, athletics, aquatics and sport education; and current certificates in Emergency First Aid Level 2 and AustSwim Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety

Corequisite: Enrolment in D3001 BEd(Hons), D3002 to D3009 BEd(Hons)(Secondary doubles), D6001 MTeach

Overview

This unit prepares you to teach school Health and Physical Education (HPE) from Years 7 to 12. It focuses in particular on the ‘Movement and Physical Activity’ strand of the Australian/Victorian Curriculum for HPE. Weaving theory and practice, workshops are designed to challenge your thinking about HPE, and provide you with essential skills, knowledge and understandings to critically engage with a range of curriculum frameworks, models and pedagogical approaches (related to planning, teaching and assessment). National and State policy and curriculum provide a focus for investigation of the political, social and cultural factors influencing HPE. You will be provided with opportunities to further develop and consolidate your pedagogical content knowledge, as well as research and strengthen your own practice.

You can expect to undertake a minimum total workload of 144 hours per teaching period which may include:

  • on average 24 contact hours of scheduled activities which may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement; and
  • 120 hours of self-directed/independent study to make up the minimum required hours

You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with relevant literature and resources. Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding.
