Successful completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited fourth year sequence in psychology and EDF5561.

Prohibitions

Overview

In this unit, case formulation skills are consolidated and extended by introducing theory and skills training in two empirically supported intervention approaches; Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness Based Approaches (e.g. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy; ACT). You will examine the evidence base for and critically evaluate the applicability of these approaches to common presenting issues across the lifespan and with diverse population groups. Teaching approaches will include lectures, modelling and skills practice in small groups.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    critically appraise the applications and efficacy of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Mindfulness Based Approaches for common presenting issues.

    evaluate the appropriateness and suitability of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Mindfulness Based Approaches for a diverse range of populations with a specific focus on different contexts.

    integrate knowledge of case conceptualisation with evidence-based intervention to develop an intervention plan for clients with commonly seen presenting issues.

  4. 4

    demonstrate skill competence (suitable for a provisionally registered psychologist) in a range of cognitive behaviour therapy and mindfulness techniques, and self-reflect on practitioner competence.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study.
 
Usually, you can expect to engage with:
 
A. On campus enrolment
• 24 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and
• the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study
 
B. Flexible enrolment
• 6 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities;
• 18 hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed learning activities; and
• the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study
 
Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

In order to meet the needs of students with varying amounts of practice experience and knowledge of cognitive behaviour therapy and mindfulness based approaches, a range of teaching modalities will be employed including: scheduled classes and pre-class reading/activities to introduce key unit concepts; small group discussions to extend and consolidate new knowledge; case based teaching to develop critical thinking skills; modelling of intervention techniques to demonstrate key unit skills; and role plays to facilitate skill development and self-reflective practice.
