Overview
In this unit, you will learn to conduct basic behaviour assessments to inform the selection of treatment goals and objectives, and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. In this unit, you will learn about (a) important considerations for selecting and defining target behaviours, (b) various strategies for measuring behaviour, (c) methods for assessing and improving the quality of measurement, and (d) tactics for constructing and interpreting graphic displays of data. In addition, you will learn about specific tactics of scientific research in behaviour analysis, including (a) the components of experiments in behaviour analysis, (b) single subject research designs, and (c) tactics for visually analysing graphed data to identify functional relations.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
select and define socially significant target behaviours
- 2
identify the strengths and limitations of different measurement systems, select appropriate
measurement systems for different dimensions of behaviour, and use continuous and
discontinuous measurement systems - 3
create graphic displays of behaviour
- 4
identify the defining features of single subject research designs, and describe how experimental
control is demonstrated with various research designs - 5
analyse the results of single subject experiments to identify functional relations
- 6
review and interpret articles from the behaviour analytic literature
Workload and teaching
- Tutorials24 hours
- Teaching approachActive learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study.
Usually, you can expect to engage with:
• 12 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities, plus 33 hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed learning activities and the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study
OR
• 45 hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed learning activities and the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study^
^ International students studying in Australia are not permitted to undertake this scheduled learning delivery mode.
Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with relevant literature and resources. Further, you will be encouraged to deepen your understanding of topic areas through collegial discussion and debate, and by participating in activities designed to extend your understanding.
