Overview

In this unit, you will explore how mathematical and numeracy concepts develop when young children experience meaningful opportunities to apply their mathematical thinking. You will learn to understand and develop children’s thinking in mathematics from birth to five. You will explore curriculum frameworks, key early mathematical and numeracy concepts and pedagogical strategies to program and plan for children’s mathematical development through play, inquiry, and problem solving. You will engage with current research, policy, and practice on early years numeracy and the enhancement of young children’s mathematical reasoning. You will investigate tools, technologies, and processes for monitoring and evaluating children’s thinking and fostering their mathematical progress in inclusive ways. You will critically reflect on your childhood experiences with mathematics to become aware of how your early experiences influence your current mathematical pedagogy.
