Overview

In this unit, you will explore how mathematical concepts develop as young children experience meaningful opportunities to develop their mathematical thinking in a range of settings such as home, pre-school, childcare, school, and community. You will learn to understand and develop children's thinking in mathematics from infancy through to the early years of school. You will explore key early mathematical concepts and pedagogical strategies for enhancing children's mathematical development through play, inquiry, and problem solving. You will engage with current research, policy, curriculum frameworks, and practice on early years numeracy and the enhancement of young children's mathematical reasoning. You will build your conceptual frameworks for understanding children’s mathematical growth. You will investigate tools, technologies, and processes for monitoring children's thinking and fostering their mathematical progress in inclusive ways. You will reflect on your own experiences and perspectives as mathematics learners to develop an awareness of how your beliefs about mathematics and numeracy influence your interactions with children. You will consider strategies for your ongoing learning and development as educators.
