Overview
This unit will address issues of sustainability in the built environments from a number of perspectives and provide you with a variety of lenses in which the built environments interlock with the human and natural system. You will apply skills and knowledge from this unit, and use a rigorous process of design, simulation, validation, and evaluation, to solve real-world problems. Topics include passive and active technologies, building energy simulation and modelling of different domains in indoor environmental quality, field data acquisition and analysis, building codes and rating system, and the topics intersecting with other fields, such as ubiquitous computing, architecture design, public health, high-performance materials, etc.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
identify the key sustainability issues that should be addressed in different phases of the building lifecycle
- 2
think critically and apply appropriate techniques for sustainable development of the built environments
- 3
analyse the building performance using a combination of simulation and measurement approaches
- 4
compare different building codes and rating systems, and use one of them to appraise the building performance
- 5
generate high-quality technical reports to summarise the design and operation of a sustainable building.
Workload and teaching
2 hours of workshop, 2 hours of practice class and 8 hours of private study per week.
