Overview

This unit will address issues of sustainability in the built environments from a number of perspectives and provide you with a variety of lenses in which the built environments interlock with the human and natural system. You will apply skills and knowledge from this unit, and use a rigorous process of design, simulation, validation, and evaluation, to solve real-world problems. Topics include passive and active technologies, building energy simulation and modelling of different domains in indoor environmental quality, field data acquisition and analysis, building codes and rating system, and the topics intersecting with other fields, such as ubiquitous computing, architecture design, public health, high-performance materials, etc.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

identify the key sustainability issues that should be addressed in different phases of the building lifecycle

  2. 2

think critically and apply appropriate techniques for sustainable development of the built environments

  3. 3

analyse the building performance using a combination of simulation and measurement approaches

  4. 4

compare different building codes and rating systems, and use one of them to appraise the building performance

  5. 5

generate high-quality technical reports to summarise the design and operation of a sustainable building.

Workload and teaching

  • Workshops12 hours
  • Practical activities24 hours
  • Teaching approachProblem-based learning
  • Teaching approachActive learning

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

Learning in this unit is through the expert-led sessions, activities in the practice classes, and pre- and post-class exercises. Learning materials are presented in the workshops or pre-recorded videos, and then reinforced through discussions and activities in interactive sessions. Case studies and practices allow you to apply the knowledge learned in the subject and to develop higher order of thinking skills. You should have access to a WINDOWS 10 LAPTOP as the simulation tools to be used in the practice classes and assignments can only be installed and run on a Windows 10 operating system.
