Enrolment rules

If you are enrolled in course B6014, there is no prerequisite to undertake this unit.

To be successful in this unit, background knowledge and application of maths is required at the equivalent of VCE Year 12 Higher level. You may have satisfied this by completing relevant prerequisite unit/s, or you have covered relevant topics in your final years of secondary study. You should self-assess your maths competency prior to enrolling in this unit.

Overview

This unit aims to provide an introduction of several important mathematical and statistical techniques that are of particular relevance to actuarial work. It covers the topics of exploratory data analysis, linear regression, generalised linear models, Bayesian statistics, and credibility theory, with a focus on their use in actuarial and insurance problems.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

use appropriate statistical tools to perform exploratory data analysis

  2. 2

use linear regression models for handling insurance and financial data

  3. 3

use generalised linear models for modelling complex data

  4. 4

apply Bayesian models and credibility theory to insurance problems.

Workload and teaching
