Overview
This unit introduces the principles of data management through the design, implementation, and use of relational databases. It develops foundational skills in modelling data, translating real-world requirements into sound relational designs, and implementing those designs in an enterprise-scale database system. You will learn how to define schemas, enforce integrity, manage transactions, and retrieve and update data using declarative query languages, while also developing an awareness of the broader data-management landscape beyond the relational model. Through practical database design and querying tasks, the unit builds the discipline required to manage data accurately, responsibly, and in ways that support future work in software projects, analytics, and large-scale systems.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Apply privacy-aware and ethical working practices when handling data assets, recognising obligations around consent, retention and protection across the data lifecycle;
- 2
Describe how data-management decisions shape equity, sustainability and Indigenous data sovereignty, and identify concrete opportunities to design responsibly for diverse communities;
- 3
Communicate data designs, schemas and query intentions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders using diagrams, declarative queries and structured written explanations;
- 4
Design, code, test and document database schemas, integrity constraints and queries to agreed standards, making transparent use of AI-enabled tools to accelerate routine work while verifying correctness.
