Faculty of Information Technology
FIT3171 Databases is a level 3, 6-credit-point, undergraduate unit from the Faculty of Information Technology, offered in 2027 in Summer B at Clayton. It needs FIT1045, FIT1048, FIT1051, FIT1053, ENG1003 or ENG1013 and unlocks 6 units, leading on to 53 units in all. Students rate it 5.0 out of 5 from 1 review and call it easy.
One of the most practical units in the degree. SQL, normalisation and transactions are things you will use in every job. Clear assignments, fair marking and well organised labs. Highly recommend even if you are not doing a data major.
You can't enrol if you have passed any of these.
Pass these before you enrol.
6 units list FIT3171 as a prerequisite or corequisite.
The same content under another code. Only one of them counts.
This unit will provide an introduction to the concepts of database design and usage and the related issues of data management. You will develop skills in planning, designing, and implementing a data model using an enterprise-scale relational database system (Oracle). Methods and techniques will also be presented to populate, retrieve, update and implement integrity features on data in the implemented database system.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
Apply the theories of the relational database model;
Develop a sound relational database design;
Implement a relational database based on a sound database design;
Manage data that meets user requirements, including queries and transactions;
Differentiate non-relational database model and the relational database model;
Develop programming structures within a database backend.
This unit has a requirement of 1-2 hours per week of asynchronous learning.
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled online and face to face learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated reading and preparation for scheduled teaching activities.

Monash FIT GitLab Server
All students must maintain their unit work on the FIT GitLab server (https://git.infotech.monash.edu/) to provide a secure repository for completed work and demonstrate a clear development history. You will be provided with an account on this server.
Monash Oracle and MongoDB Servers
This unit uses the Oracle 12 and MongoDB databases running on Monash servers. All students will have an account on this server, which will suffice for all database work this semester. To access this server, you must install and run the Monash VPN software (details are available on the Moodle/Ed Lesson site).
VSCode
This unit uses VSCode as a client to access Oracle, MongoDB and FIT GitLab servers. You must install the latest version of this software.
Data Modeler
The client software for data modelling will be available for download from the unit Moodle/Ed Lesson site. You must ONLY use the prescribed version provided by the teaching team. You must not download and use Data Modeler from any other site.
You need FIT1045, FIT1048, FIT1051, FIT1053, ENG1003 or ENG1013 before you enrol.
FIT3171 is a prerequisite or corequisite for 6 units, including FIT3003, FIT3152, FIT3161, FIT3163, FIT3182 and FIT4002. Those lead on to 53 units in all.
In 2027, FIT3171 runs in Summer B at Clayton.
Students who took it rate it easy to do well in and moderate on workload (1 rating). The handbook expects about 144 hours of study across the semester.
