    One of the most practical units in the degree. SQL, normalisation and transactions are things you will use in every job. Clear assignments, fair marking and well organised labs. Highly recommend even if you are not doing a data major.

Overview

This unit will provide an introduction to the concepts of database design and usage and the related issues of data management. You will develop skills in planning, designing, and implementing a data model using an enterprise-scale relational database system (Oracle). Methods and techniques will also be presented to populate, retrieve, update and implement integrity features on data in the implemented database system.

Technology resources

Monash FIT GitLab Server
All students must maintain their unit work on the FIT GitLab server (https://git.infotech.monash.edu/) to provide a secure repository for completed work and demonstrate a clear development history. You will be provided with an account on this server.

Monash Oracle and MongoDB Servers
This unit uses the Oracle 12 and MongoDB databases running on Monash servers. All students will have an account on this server, which will suffice for all database work this semester. To access this server, you must install and run the Monash VPN software (details are available on the Moodle/Ed Lesson site).

VSCode
This unit uses VSCode as a client to access Oracle, MongoDB and FIT GitLab servers. You must install the latest version of this software.

Data Modeler
The client software for data modelling will be available for download from the unit Moodle/Ed Lesson site. You must ONLY use the prescribed version provided by the teaching team. You must not download and use Data Modeler from any other site.
