Overview
In this unit, you will develop a foundational understanding of key Artificial Intelligence paradigms, from early symbolic approaches to modern machine learning and deep learning. You will examine how historical efforts to build intelligent machines have reshaped our understanding of what “intelligence” means, alongside the ethical questions these shifts raise. You will explore a range of AI applications, such as game-playing systems, chatbots, recommender systems, and robotics, while analysing their capabilities, limitations, and explainability. Through guided hands-on activities, you will build a small AI system using contemporary tools and critically consider issues of bias, governance, and responsible AI use.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Apply governance principles to scope appropriate uses of AI, identify risks and mitigations, and justify responsible deployment decisions;
- 2
Select and use suitable AI methods and tools to construct an end-to-end prototype that makes clear its assumptions and evaluation criteria;
- 3
Use AI-assisted development workflows to support implementation, testing and documentation while maintaining transparency and oversight;
- 4
Implement, evaluate and refine AI algorithms and components in code, integrating libraries and services to meet defined functional and non-functional requirements.
