FIT2165 Computer networks

This unit introduces computer networks with an explicit software and system-centric focus. It provides foundational knowledge of data communications, network architectures, protocols, and associated software interfaces, and introduces core principles underpinning interoperable networked systems. The unit develops understanding of how data is transmitted, addressed, and routed across networked environments, drawing on standard models of communication and layered system design. It examines key concepts across network layers, including mechanisms that support reliable and efficient data exchange in both local and wide-area contexts. You will analyse network behaviour and performance, considering factors such as traffic management, access strategies, and scalability. The unit also introduces fundamental principles of network design, configuration, management, and security, enabling students to reason about and evaluate networked solutions in relation to organisational needs and constraints.
