Overview
This unit engages you in advanced concepts related to human-machine interaction, focusing on creating intuitive and functional interfaces. You will explore core principles of anthropometrics, the application of physical, semantic, and cultural constraints, and the mapping of control and feedback systems. You will address physical and virtual issues and affordances to develop user-centred solutions.
The unit combines theoretical foundations - such as anthropometry, ergonomics, and cognitive psychology - with practical applications, deepening your understanding of how people physically and psychologically interact with objects and systems. You will be encouraged to take an experimental approach to problem-solving, integrating theoretical insights into tangible solutions.
Project work will be documented in a production-ready folio, with final design proposals presented as detailed models or prototypes, demonstrating a refined, human-centred design approach.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Understand key theoretical principles to analyse human-machine interactions effectively;
- 2
Utilise an experimental approach to problem-solving, prototyping designs that address physical and virtual human-centred issues effectively, focusing on usability and accessibility;
- 3
Integrate principles of anthropometrics, ergonomics, design constraints, and cognitive psychology to create comprehensive, user-centred solutions for both physical and digital problems;
- 4
Reflect on your role and responsibility as a designer in shaping user experiences through teamwork, evaluating the impact of collective decisions on diverse users and their interactions with systems and products;
- 5
Cultivate an empathetic and responsible approach to design by fostering a commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and user well-being in all stages of the design process;
- 6
Develop self-directed learning strategies to continuously advance your understanding of human-centred design, responding to feedback, and independently identifying areas for growth and problem-solving approaches.
