Overview
This unit aims to capture the multifaceted nature of Design and elements of design practice. Project based multidimensional problems are introduced in a studio setting. The studio is divided into two main components: one embraces an open-ended approach and centres around design methods to understand a problem deeply. Here you will be exposed to a range of challenges that Design is called to unpack, in particular in relation to Sustainable Development Goals 10 and 11. You will think creatively about how to conduct an enquiry, source relevant information, map, and develop conceptual proposals in response to the identified social needs. The second studio component is a structured skills lab, predominantly focusing on outcome development. Here, you will learn to grasp the financial, marketing and business implications of taking a product concept into the commercial realm. Upon identifying a market or societal need, you will research and gather pertinent data, formulate a product design specification, and propose a final product design. Both components involve documenting project work for social impact and/or manufacturing, presented in a folio format and verbally. Final design proposals may evolve into detailed models or prototypes where appropriate.
