Overview
This unit examines the development, operation, and regulation of the contemporary conventional and Islamic international financial systems and markets, the transactions that are conducted within those, and the instruments and structures used. It will examine the interplay of conventional and Islamic banking and finance concepts, techniques and systems, and how potential legal problems presented by their interplay can be overcome or managed. The banking and capital markets of Australia, Malaysia, the United States and Europe will be considered, also with reference to the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 and Asian Financial Crisis of 1997. Topics covered will include capital adequacy, payment systems, syndicated lending, securitisation, bond issues, derivatives, regulatory framework for Islamic financial institutions and Islamic finance, contracts in Islamic finance, and dispute resolution in Islamic finance.

Workload and teaching
Students enrolled in this unit will be provided with 24 contact hours of seminars per semester whether intensive, semi-intensive, or semester-long offering. Students will be expected to do reading set for class, and to undertake additional research and reading applicable to a 6 credit point unit.
