Overview

In this unit, you will examine major internationalisation theories, concepts, tools and strategies as they apply to firms (SMEs to multinationals) in emerging markets. You will learn how organisations formulate international strategies for entering, and competing in emerging markets and how they analyse and evaluate those strategies. The topics covered include formulation of international strategy, assessment of emerging market country attractiveness, issues facing internationalising organisations in emerging markets, liability of foreignness of the modes of foreign operations and transfer of corporate values into the emerging markets.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

This unit includes case-based teaching, where you apply your knowledge and engage in analytical and reflective thinking to solve complex contextual scenarios. Activities are often designed so that there is not one clear answer, but you need to work together to examine, analyse and make decisions to resolve the situation.
