Overview
Advancing Midwifery Practice is a 12 Credit Point theory unit designed to provide students with the knowledge to become leaders in the provision and implementation of woman-centred midwifery care. The content is delivered in five modules. The first module examines global trends in infant and maternal care, and the role of the midwife. The next module focuses on quality and safety in the maternity context. Students will critique the Lancet series on midwifery (2014) and investigate implementation of the Framework for Quality Maternal and Newborn Care. In the third module, students will explore educational principles and strategies for advancing midwifery knowledge and skills, both globally and in their specific context. Next, clinical decision making and the use of evidence to promote quality maternity care, will be critiqued. In the fifth module, professional autonomy and collaborative practice in multidisciplinary teams is investigated. Finally, students will analyse the role of leadership and advocacy in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the key principles necessary to advance midwifery practice.
