Overview
This unit is designed to cover a range of electronic and magnetic materials for advanced device applications such as information storage, energy storage, efficient power electronics and spintronics. Specific topics to be covered are electrical and electronic properties of different classes of materials such as dielectrics, ferroelectrics, superconductors and materials; magnetic properties - microscopic origin of magnetism in specific classes of materials, domains, technical magnetization, coercivity and core loss, spin-dependent magneto-transport; and nanosize effects.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Apply Hund’s rules to predict the electron configuration and magnetic moment of an atom.
- 2
Discuss the relationships between intrinsic magnetic properties and macroscopic behaviours of magnetic materials.
- 3
Appreciate the basis for the design of engineering magnetic materials.
- 4
Discuss the effect of nanoscale grain refinement on magnetic properties.
- 5
Assess functional materials in terms of their synthesis, properties, characterization and application.
- 6
Assess various novel classes of functional materials for their application in electronics and energy-related devices such as batteries and energy storage, transistors and integrated circuits, electric motors and inductors
- 7
Synthesise laboratory results and literature data to evaluate functional material properties.

- Teaching approachActive learning
- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
2 hours of workshops per week and laboratory practicals where a group of typically five students carry out experiments in a collaborative manner.
1 hour of applied classes where problems related to lecture contents are solved.
