Synopsis
This unit will focus on the role of materials in the design and synthesis of products and systems, achieved via the execution of a group project which will aim to present a solution to a real-world problem. Project management strands of the unit will focus on the key aspects of quality management and risk. The unit also aims to support the development of communication skills, with emphasis in this unit on oral communication, both formal and informal. Technical skills covered include CAD, material selection, design for manufacturing and assembly, physical and virtual prototyping, as well as developing materials construction and workshop skills. The project work in this unit will form a key part of a graduate-level professional portfolio.
