Overview
This unit will focus on the role of materials in the design and synthesis of products and systems, achieved via the execution of a group project which will aim to present a solution to a real-world problem. Project management strands of the unit will focus on the key aspects of quality management and risk. The unit also aims to support the development of communication skills, with emphasis in this unit on oral communication, both formal and informal. Technical skills covered include CAD, material selection, design for manufacturing and assembly, physical and virtual prototyping, as well as developing materials construction and workshop skills. The project work in this unit will form a key part of a graduate-level professional portfolio.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Draw on knowledge of design processes and structure-processing-property relationships to generate creative potential solutions to a materials engineering design brief.
- 2
Appraise potential solutions to a brief, while considering societal, health, safety, legal and IP, cultural, ethical and environmental factors, and relevant industry standards.
- 3
Safely and effectively apply workshop tools and skills, along with industry-relevant design processes including CAD/CAE, formal materials selection, and design for manufacturing and assembly, to design and prototype appropriate solutions to a problem.
- 4
Justify design decisions based on market potential/viability and communicate project outcomes effectively with stakeholders.
- 5
Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a team, performing appropriate roles to enable effective collaboration and task management.
- 6
Reflect critically upon the solutions to an engineering design problem and on the processes involved in successful teamwork.

- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-4 hours of scheduled learning activities and 8-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
Learning materials will be provided for reading. In the class, you will apply the learned skill to the design task.
A design problem will be provided. You will apply what you learn from this unit and come up with the solution for a real design problem.
