Overview

This unit builds on the skills and knowledge of the Registered Nurse working in a perioperative specialisation.

This unit will enable you to develop foundational knowledge of peri-operative and peri-anaesthetic nursing roles which will assist you to effectively assess, and appropriately manage elective and emergency surgical situations.

Study will assist you to implement evidence-based person centred care, engage in risk reduction, and support outcome optimisation throughout patients entire surgical journeys. The unit will support this related to the core roles of anaesthetic nurse, instrument circulating nurse, and recovery room nurse.

The unit will provide you with the tools you to analyse complex perioperative situations from clinical, legal and ethical perspectives. Additionally, you will be introduced to new and emerging technologies in the perioperative setting, such as robotics and minimally invasive surgery.

Study will also advance your knowledge and skills in asepsis and specimen handling related to perioperative nursing.

    Implement a  comprehensive patient assessment during each phase of the perioperative journey: pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative.

    Critically review evidenced based principles used to deliver and prioritise patient care

    Effectively manage the deteriorating perioperative patient.

    Evaluate and apply the principles of asepsis and infection control in the perioperative setting.

  5. 5

    Apply legal requirements, ethical considerations and regulatory standards to the delivery of person-centred care in the perioperative setting.

    Determine and discriminate between surgical, anaesthetic and post-operative risk factors that impact patients’ surgical journeys.
