Overview
From Summer semester A 2025 onwards: In this unit, you will explore how food and nutrition policies influence public health, with a focus on Malaysia’s national nutrition strategies. You will analyse policies addressing key issues such as malnutrition, obesity, and food security, while also evaluating global approaches to nutrition governance.
Throughout the unit, you will engage in case studies, policy analysis, and discussions, enabling you to develop evidence-based policy recommendations that consider economic, cultural, and environmental factors. By applying critical thinking and research skills, you will learn to propose innovative solutions to nutrition-related challenges.
By the end of the course, you will be equipped with the analytical, policy evaluation, and communication skills needed to contribute to nutrition policy development and advocacy. This course will prepare you for a future in public health, policy analysis, and food system management in Malaysia and beyond.
Semester 1: This is one of Theme 3 units and complements content of “Contemporary Development in Nutrition” unit which is delivered concurrently in this semester. In this unit, you will be primarily exposed to national and international perspectives in public health nutrition, and policies that affects food and nutrition. The unit will also discuss sustainable development goals with a focus on sustainability of food systems and food security. Various aspects of policies such as plans of action and trade policies will be covered. Environmental determinants of foods such as climate change and food production, and genetically modified foods (GMF) will be discussed.
