Overview

This unit continues to develop the role of the paramedic as a clinician by developing knowledge and skills needed to care for birthing women and neonates in the community. The unit will be case based, and will include clinical skills laboratories and simulation to develop essential clinical skills, clinical problem solving and decision making competencies.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Describe the epidemiology, presentation and management of selected health conditions experienced by women during pregnancy, birth and following childbirth and recommend appropriate paramedic strategies;

  2. 2

    Evaluate models of care available in the maternity services and explain how cultural diversity can influence the care for pregnant women and consider approaches to paramedic care in a variety of situations;

  3. 3

    Identify and interpret the evidence supporting the paramedic care of pregnant and childbearing women and their babies;

  4. 4

    Plan and implement a model of care for a woman experiencing a normal or complicated birth;

  5. 5

    Demonstrate the processes of paramedic assessment of the newborn immediately after childbirth in both, uncomplicated and emergency situations, and select appropriate patient management;

  6. 6

    Discuss how cultural diversity can influence the care for pregnant women and consider approaches to paramedic care in a variety of situations.
