Prerequisite: (PAR2013 or PAR2012), PAR2022, PAR2032, PAR2020

Corequisite: Must be enrolled in course code M2011.

Overview

In this unit you will continue develop your role, knowledge and the skills needed to care for the maternity patient and neonates in the community. The unit will be case based, and will include clinical skills laboratories and simulation to develop essential clinical and communication skills, clinical problem solving and decision-making competencies.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Explain the epidemiology, presentation and management of selected health conditions experienced during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

    Plan and implement care for the maternity patient experiencing a normal or complicated birth.

  3. 3

    Plan and implement the care for the neonate immediately after childbirth in both, uncomplicated and emergency situations.

  4. 4

    Examine models of care available in maternity services and the impact of cultural diversity on the care of the maternity patient.

  5. 5

    Interpret evidence that supports paramedic care of the maternity patient and neonate.

  6. 6

    Evaluate the paramedic approach to the care of the maternity patient and the newborn.
