Overview

This unit introduces you to darkroom and studio practices associated with analogue and aspects of digital photography. It develops upon skills, knowledge and theory of photomedia and creative image production. You will develop your understanding and application of lens-based photography through the construction of photographic 'reality' and other 'manipulated' approaches. In the unit, you will develop skills in darkroom-based photography and experiment with the materiality of the photographic medium. You will have the opportunity to explore a range of printing techniques (i.e. black and white, colour and alternative processes) and mixed media. In addition, there will be engagement of studio based photography (i.e. digital and medium format cameras, tungsten and electronic studio lighting).

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Utilise a wide range of options and controls available through digital applications and use of photographic equipment with increasing confidence and proficiency;

  2. 2

    Demonstrate competence with dark-room based photography and manipulation, including the awareness of print-based approaches associated with advanced black and white processes and colour photography;

  3. 3

    Explore further the camera-based approaches associated with constructed photography with an increased conceptual understanding of visual language and communication;

  4. 4

    Demonstrate awareness of the construction of photographic representation, utilising a range of lighting techniques, and studio-based approaches;

  5. 5

    Create artwork that shows an increasingly sophisticated approach to photographic image production and its contextualisation in theories and histories of photography;

  6. 6

    Understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.

Workload and teaching

12 hours per week including 4 contact hours plus 8 hours of independent study.
