PRERQUISITE: For students enrolled in course codes: 3896, M6027: Must have passed POM5001, POM5002, POM5003, POM5004.

Overview

The development of a successful and efficient perioperative approach to patient care requires knowledge and skills in a range of complementary disciplines and research - informed professional practices These include consideration of human factors and leadership, health economics, perioperative outcomes and the use of protocols and pathways. This unit will facilitate the development of knowledge and skills to enhance the delivery of perioperative medical care. It will also enabling student to identify a particular issue of interest to them and begin preparatory work towards the capstone project which will be completed in the final unit of the course.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Evaluate the different models of perioperative care that exist globally.

    Understand the importance of defining and accurately measuring patient outcomes and the implication to best practice.

    Recognise the key role that human factors play in the leadership and development of a highly functional perioperative team.

    Analyze the health economic implications of efficient perioperative practice.

  5. 5

    Incorporate emerging and standard protocols and pathways in complex patient management.

  6. 6

    Identify an issue of relevance to the practice of perioperative medicine capable of further investigation and research within the context of a capstone project.

Workload and teaching

This unit will be on-line only. The workload requirement will be 10-12 hours per week (on average).

Weekly workload consists of reading the course content notes for each module, watching associated videos or listening to podcasts, reading a selection of extended reading articles provided with each module, and preparation of assignment tasks.

For the capstone project, workload will involve developing a plan for a project, researching relevant current evidence and formulating a comprehensive response.
