Overview

This unit is designed as an introduction to Industrial-Organizational (I-O) Psychology. I-O Psychology consists on the application of psychological theories, models and concepts to better understand people’s behaviour in organizations and the workplace, address factors that impact organizations’ success, and improve people’s performance and well-being in the workplace. Throughout this unit you will gain a general understanding of the practical applications of psychological theories, models and concepts in the workplace; and have the opportunity for practical experience in the form of a series of hands-on activities.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Explain the major subtopics of I-O Psychology and their role in work organisations.

    Identify and define basic terms and concepts used in I/O Psychology.

    Compare and contrast the different  factors proposed as determinants  of work behaviour (e.g. job performance, organizational citizenship, absenteeism, and turnover) and work attitude (e.g.  attitude (e.g. job satisfaction  and organizational commitment)

    Identify and evaluate issues or situation in work organisations.

  5. 5

    Apply fundamental psychological theories, models and concepts to generate potential solutions or alternatives to address issues or situation in work organisations.

  6. 6

    Identify the role of psychological science in shaping  the understanding of human behaviour, cognition, and emotion in work organizations.

Workload and teaching

Two hour lecture per week, plus six 2 hour workshops in the semester.
