Overview
Approximately 18% of Australians live with disability (AIHW, 2020). Therefore, whatever career path you embark on, you will come across clients and colleagues with lived/living experience of disability. In this unit, you will gain an understanding of various kinds of disability with a particular focus on those that impact brain and mental health.
The unit will focus on giving you a knowledge of disability, as well as how disability can impact participation and activity in everyday life. You will gain a better understanding of the intersection between psychology and disability. You will also have the opportunity to develop skills that are relevant to working with people with disabilities. These topics will be covered within the frameworks of the Australian healthcare system and the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The unit will provide you with relevant and translatable knowledge and skills, helping you to understand disability, appreciate the impact it may have, and work towards greater inclusion of people with disability.
