Requisites

Enrolment rules

Must be enrolled in course code M6042 or B6035 or B6056.

For students enrolled in M6042: Must have passed PSY5011, PSY5012, PSY5013, PSY5014.

For students enrolled in B6035: Must have passed 24 credit units.

Overview

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2024) estimates that around 1 in 6 Australians experience disability. In this unit, you will further your understanding of ableism, disability and inclusion. You will have the opportunity to develop skills that are relevant to working in varied contexts with people with disability, and those who support them. This learning will be positioned within key frameworks to allow for a thorough examination of wide-ranging barriers to inclusion and their impacts.  You will learn about the importance of developing solutions to these barriers that take a human rights approach to disability.  This unit will help you understand disability as an aspect of diversity and work towards being more inclusive.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    Analyse different experiences and impacts of disability, and the intersection of disability with mental health.

    Demonstrate communication skills which include and empower people with lived experience of disability.

    Identify individual and systemic barriers to the inclusion of people with lived experience of disability.

    Apply knowledge of key frameworks, policies and systems in support of people with lived experience of disability.

    Specify possible solutions to societal and workplace barriers to inclusion for people with lived experience of disability.
