Overview

This unit is the second of two units designed to introduce students to the principles of pathophysiology and their relevance to the discipline of medical radiation science.

The unit builds upon the knowledge developed in the first semester unit pathophysiology unit and extends those principles to a consideration of altered disease affecting the haematological, central nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, renal and gastrointestinal tract systems.

The unit will enable students to recognise common pathologies affecting these body systems as visualised on a variety of medical images.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Relate knowledge of the normal gross and regional anatomy of the haematological, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, renal and gastrointestinal tract systems to understanding the impact of disease processes affecting these systems.

  2. 2

Describe the key histological features of the haematological, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, renal and gastrointestinal tract systems.

  3. 3

Apply knowledge of the principles of pathophysiology to the disease processes within the haematological, central nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, renal and gastrointestinal tract systems.

  4. 4

Identify the radiographic representation of disease processes associated with the haematological, central nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, renal and gastrointestinal tract systems.

  5. 5

Describe how pathological imaging is used in the radiation therapy context
