Overview
In this unit, you will advance your knowledge and skills in key areas of radiographic and sonographic practice. Building on your previous learning, you will explore five interconnected themes: Sonographic Practice and Science, Radiographic Practice, Breast Imaging, Research and Dosimetry Techniques. Through these themes, you will develop the ability to interpret abdominal ultrasound images by integrating anatomical and physiological knowledge, apply appropriate imaging protocols in simulated or clinical settings, and justify your clinical decisions. You will enhance your knowledge of ultrasound instrumentation and how it informs image acquisition in practice.
In the area of radiographic and breast imaging, you will analyse mammographic techniques and psychosocial considerations that support patient-centred care. You will also learn to apply clinical reasoning to perform radiographic examinations in clinical practice.
You will explore principles of radiation interaction and dosimetry, enabling evaluation of dose modelling across different imaging contexts. You will be introduced to foundational research skills, data collection strategies and basic statistical analysis, to support evidence-based decision-making in medical imaging.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Synthesize knowledge of abdominal anatomy and physiology to interpret ultrasound images.
- 2
Apply appropriate patient preparation and imaging protocols for upper abdominal ultrasound in simulated or clinical settings.
- 3
Justify clinical decision making, including the differentiation between normal and pathological appearances, in clinical practice.
- 4
Synthesise principles of ultrasound instrumentation in the clinical application when completing abdominal scanning.
- 5
Evaluate data collection strategies and perform basic statistical analyses relevant to medical imaging, interpreting results to inform evidence-based practice.
- 6
Evaluate emerging innovations in breast imaging and communicate their relevance to clinical practice.
- 7
Analyse principles of radiation interaction and dosimetric modelling to evaluate dose calculations in a range of medical imaging contexts.
- 8
Analyse mammographic techniques and psychosocial considerations to support best practice in patient-centred mammography.
- 9
Apply clinical reasoning and reflective practice across a range of radiographic procedures in a clinical environment.
- 10
Evaluate and integrate personal learning goals to perform radiographic examinations in clinical practice.
