Medical imaging science and practice 1

RAD3051

Synopsis

Through completing this unit, you will develop an understanding of the principles and techniques behind effective and safe computed tomography (CT) imaging. The unit will enable you to compare different systems and the reconstruction methods involved in image acquisition and processing. You be able to understand CT artefacts, quality assurance processes and apply your knowledge of radiation protection and dosimetry into CT.

You will develop clinical competency (knowledge and application) in the radiographic methods of CT examinations of the head, neck, chest, abdomen and spine. Building on cross-sectional anatomy and pathology knowledge from Year 2, you will apply this to clinical practice in CT.

Continuing your development in General Radiography skills, you will progress to a ‘Competent Student Radiographer’ including contrast, trauma, paediatric and mobile imaging.

Foundational knowledge of digital health systems will be further developed in the areas of digital image processing, computer interfaces, medical image formats, the DICOM standard, image compression and the hospital Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

The medicolegal aspect of healthcare will be introduced, and building on ethical practice from Years 1 and 2, you will be able to apply this knowledge to practice within an appropriate ethical and medico-legal framework.

Having completed Allies in Indigenous Health I in Year 2, through completing Allies II in this unit, you will be empowered to provide culturally safe care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
