Overview

This unit extends a health practitioner’s existing knowledge of pathology to enhance their capacity to accurately identify and interpret x-ray images.

The unit will address the current understanding of diseases affecting the musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory, abdominal and neurological systems.

Students will examine ways in which pathology affects normal physiology and consider the consequences of this understanding for the accurate interpretation of x-ray images including CT images.

Compare and contrast benign and malignant musculoskeletal pathology and comment on their radiographic characteristics.

  2. 2

Correlate x-ray images of the thorax with underlying pathology such as neoplasia, thrombotic episodes and septic emboli and analyse associated physiological processes

  3. 3

Critically evaluate clinical presentations indicating an acute abdomen and correlate pathologies with diagnostic tests including radiographic images

  4. 4

Relate the anatomy and physiology of the pancreas and liver with diagnostic procedures to determine pathology

  5. 5

Compare characteristics of CNS pathology, in particular focal lesions caused by neoplasia or infection and evaluate how the clinical presentation and radiographic imaging aids in diagnosis
