Overview

This unit explores the fundamental principles of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) including physical design, staff and patient safety and image optimisation.

The factors that determine the effectiveness of the procedure and resultant image quality are discussed and analysed. Equipment used to generate MRI images and the design and purpose of the major components of a clinical MR scanner are critically assessed.

Human safety issues posed by magnetic and radio frequency fields are explored and considered, along with the latest research regarding the use of contrast agents.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Explain and justify the optimal physical design features that enhance operational requirements of a typical clinical MRI system

  2. 2

Explain the underlying physical principles and imaging parameters that define the signal and contrast sensitivity in MRI

  3. 3

Critically evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of gradient and spin echo sequence techniques

  4. 4

Using a risk/benefit analysis, develop protocols for the use of an MR contrast agent in clinical MR practice

  5. 5

Develop a safety plan for an MRI department to ensure staff and patient safety

  6. 6

Implement strategies to optimise MR images including identifying the likely cause and ways to correct image artefacts
