Overview

This unit explores the fundamental principles of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) including physical design, staff and patient safety and image optimisation.

The factors that determine the effectiveness of the procedure and resultant image quality are discussed and analysed. Equipment used to generate MRI images and the design and purpose of the major components of a clinical MR scanner are critically assessed.

Human safety issues posed by magnetic and radio frequency fields are explored and considered, along with the latest research regarding the use of contrast agents.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Explain and justify the key physical design features that improve the operational efficiency of a typical clinical MRI system.

  2. 2

Describe the physical principles and imaging parameters that enhance image quality and optimise image weighting.

  3. 3

Critically analyse and justify the techniques used in spin echo and gradient echo sequences.

  4. 4

Conduct a risk benefit analysis and develop protocols for using an MR contrast agent in clinical practice.

  5. 5

Explain the critical concepts of MRI safety and create a plan for an MRI department to ensure the safety of both staff and patients.

  6. 6

Identify the likely causes of image artefacts and apply strategies to optimise these images.
