Overview
This unit extends knowledge of the basic physical principles and imaging methods of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to include the MRI imaging techniques associated with cardiac and cardiovascular imaging, diffusion, perfusion and susceptibility weighted imaging.
Clinical indications and the preparation of the patient including positioning methods for these advanced techniques will be addressed. Sequence adaptations required to conform to clinical presentation, along with modifications to equipment will be considered.
The unit will conclude with an examination of the application of quality assurance principles to advanced MR imaging.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Demonstrate safety within the MRI environment using advanced physical principles.
- 2
Explain the principles of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), cardiac, vascular, perfusion and diffusion imaging in the context of evidence based practice.
- 3
Assist in the implementation of advanced cardiovascular techniques, protocols and post-processing approaches for clinical and research application.
- 4
Assess and clearly communicate pathology findings from cardiovascular, perfusion and diffusion studies.
- 5
Accurately distinguish between cardiac and vascular structures in the modification of standard Magnetic Resonance scanning techniques
- 6
Identify on-going professional development needs in relation to MRI scanning in the cardiovascular and tissue perfusion setting
