Enrolment rules
Corequisite: Must be enrolled in Bachelor of Radiation Sciences (M2013, M2017, M20024)
Prerequisite: Bachelor of Radiation Science students must have completed 96 credit points in the course. Eligibility for enrolment into this unit will be based on the WAM for RAD1081, RAD1022 and RTS2101 and the top 30 ranked students, who have applied for the Master of Radiation Therapy, will be able to enrol.
Overview
This unit explores the use of radiation therapy to treat disease. The principles of patient centred, interdisciplinary and culturally safe cancer care are discussed alongside study of the fundamental concepts related to radiation therapy planning and dosimetry. A systems-based approach will be used to deliver anatomy, physiology, pathology and oncology of the; female reproductive, male reproductive systems and metastatic disease.
Simulated learning and an orientation to clinical practice allow students to apply their knowledge to clinical cases.

Identify and describe in detail; structural and sectional anatomy, physiology, pathology and oncology related to the male and female reproductive systems

Critically analyse radiation therapy planning and pre-treatment imaging techniques with reference to international standards and the evidence-base for the male and female reproductive systems.

Critically analyse radiation therapy treatment and verification techniques with reference to international standards and the evidence-base for the male and female reproductive systems.

Describe with reference to the evidence-base, acute and late radiation therapy side effects, analysing patient care and management strategies related to the above body systems

Analyse, apply and reflect on theories of human communication, empathy, occupational health and radiation safety of the working environment, within a professional standards and ethical/legal context

Implement radiation therapy planning or treatment and patient management protocols across a range of patients and evaluate their efficacy at the level of a 'beginner/novice practitioner';
