Overview
This unit consists of online theory related to radiation therapy practice and a 10 week clinical placement, allowing you to develop technical and professional skills in radiation therapy imaging, planning, treatment and patient care, demonstrating the characteristics of a beginner student. This unit will provide you with the opportunity to develop a beginner level understanding of professional capability, practice infection control, occupational health and safety, radiation safety; communication, interprofessional care, cultural safety and develop administrative skills. You will analyse and apply the principles of radical and palliative radiation therapy planning through simulated online radiation therapy planning curriculum activities and you will continue to develop knowledge and apply the principles of treatment and patient care online and in the workplace.
Summer A Offering: This offering (for students who have RTS4102 as a pre-requisite) includes a period of 4 weeks of treatment planning and pre-clinical activities prior to clinical placement in November/December and a clinical placement of 10 weeks which commences in January.
Summer B Offering: Students will commence 10 weeks of clinical placement in January and will be exempt from Pre-clinical treatment planning activities, as they will have completed these in RTS4104 and RTS4105 of the Bachelor of Radiation Sciences.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

Analyse, apply and reflect on theories of communication, interprofessional care, cultural safety, empathy, occupational health and radiation safety of the working environment, within a professional standards and ethics context;

Record and obtain information from individuals employing appropriate observation and interviewing skills at the level of beginner student, such that the information generated may be integrated with advanced scientific theory and knowledge to provide safe and high quality levels of patient care;

Apply the principles of anatomy pathophysiology and radiation oncology in the radiation therapy clinical environment, critically reflecting on these for individual patient cases;

Critically reflect upon multi-disciplinary radiation therapy practice and identify on-going professional development needs with respect to planning, treatment and patient management;

Safely implement radiation therapy planning and treatment and demonstrate empathy in patient care across a diverse range of patients and evaluate their efficacy at the level of a 'beginner student’;

Evaluate the principles of holistic palliative care, reflecting on patient management strategies in the radiation oncology palliative care sector.
