Overview
This unit design is to facilitate student exposure to and understanding of core social work frameworks for assessment and intervention in their role in social work practice. This unit builds on the foundational knowledge of social work assessment and intervention that you developed through engagement with the foundations for social work practice units in year 1.
This unit introduces you to a number of the various key sub-specialties in social work practice with people who experience health and mental health challenges, learn how theory informs effective recovery-oriented practice in social work and learn how to deliver trauma-informed care in your approach to and interventions with people experiencing health and mental health difficulties.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

Devise and conduct a strengths-based and recovery-oriented assessment.

Apply the social determinants of health framework to social work practice in health and mental health.

Evaluate strategies for trauma-informed care and articulate how to implement these in practice with an individual and/or family.

Conduct an evidence-based, theory-informed social work assessment and intervention plan.

Adapt and implement an intervention plan that accounts for common practice challenges in the broader structural and cultural systems found in the contemporary Australian context including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations.
Workload and teaching

This unit is an intensively taught unit over 6 weeks. It uses a blended learning approach comprising 12 hours of teacher directed learning activities for 6 weeks. There will be pre-class textbook learning activities to be completed prior to the on-campus teacher directed seminars and tutorials and concludes with teacher directed post class online learning activities. In addition, it is expected that students will engage in up to 12 hours per week for 6 weeks of self- directed learning activities.
Off-campus students participate in a residential workshop of which one day will be devoted to this unit. During the 6 -week intensive teaching mode these students will be provided with the same resources as the on campus students via Moodle and access to teacher directed activities. Students will be expected to engage in up to 12 hours per week of self- directed learning activities for six weeks.
