Overview

This unit examines the history of European Modernism as it relates to the disciplines of visual communication, industrial design and spatial design. Key Modernist movements and practices are studied with particular consideration given to their ideological, political and cultural contexts and motives. The critical tendencies of twentieth-century avant-garde practices are considered in terms of their lasting implications for the social role of design. You will develop a range of critical approaches to analysing design in relation to its historical, social and cultural context skills necessary to your disciplines and practice.
