Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Describe fundamental principles of kinematics of particles and rigid body motion in a plane.

  2. 2

Describe fundamental principles of kinetics of particles and rigid body motion in a plane.

  3. 3

Apply the principles of kinematics to solve questions of particles and rigid bodies.

  4. 4

Apply the principles of kinetics to solve questions of particles and rigid bodies moving in a plane.

  5. 5

Identify the key concepts of Mechanical of Materials (MOM).

  6. 6

Apply concepts of MOM to bending and torsion, and combined stresses.

  7. 7

Apply concepts of MOM to transformation of stresses, and failure theories.

Workload and teaching

  • Teaching approachActive learning
  • Teaching approachProblem-based learning

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

The course content is delivered using online recorded lectures with additional engaging on-campus workshops. Practical classes will be on campus, providing an active learning process through activities and discussions, fostering deeper understanding and retention of the unit material.

The unit includes scheduled problem-solving sessions (practical classes) on campus every week. You need to attend these sessions, attempt the problems and discuss the solution methods and approaches. These sessions are designed to reinforce your understanding of the theoretical concepts and provide you with practical problem-solving skills.
