Overview

This unit aims to introduce the applications of artificial intelligence, such as deep learning techniques, to solve real-world problems related to the manufacturing and services sectors. Focusing on the design of deep learning frameworks, their use in computer vision tasks like image classification and object detection will be explored and discussed. This unit will also cover structured query language for database management, natural language processing for sentiment analysis and time series classification and forecasting.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Construct deep learning frameworks using open-access tools, such as TensorFlow and PyTorch, to solve real-world problems.

  2. 2

Design deep learning models for computer vision tasks like image classification and object detection.

  3. 3

Develop a database management system based on structured query language for industry use.

  4. 4

Appraise large volume text data using natural language processing for sentiment analysis.

  5. 5

Evaluate time-series data using artificial intelligence techniques for classification and forecasting.

  6. 6

Communicate deep learning solutions to real-world problems with a wider audience via oral presentations and written reports.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

You are expected to prepare for the week by studying lecture notes and watching the pre-recorded videos.

To better understand the concepts and principles, you will work by yourself or in a small group to solve real-world problems with artificial intelligence.

This unit includes interactive workshops and computer laboratories for you to enhance your knowledge learned in lectures through individual or group participation in the activity.
