Overview
In this unit, you will develop and demonstrate an in-depth understanding of bioinformatics, and its use in conjunction with genomics, for application in translational research methodology. Discipline-specific topics will include bioinformatics, statistics and experimental design. Developing a fundamental understanding of bioinformatics will provide you with a contextual basis to identify and evaluate the appropriate bioinformatic tools to apply within the disciplines of microbiology, oncology, immunology, haematology, neuroscience and metabolism. Integrating knowledge of biological systems and diseases will enable you to apply bioinformatic methodologies utilising publicly accessible databases, identify biomarkers associated with disease to interpret patient outcomes, and evaluate the translation of bioinformatic data findings into clinical practice.
This unit will consist of online specialist lectures delivered by researchers and clinicians actively working in the bioinformatics discipline and eLearning resources. You will review and evaluate methodological and scientific literature in bioinformatics and disease with a focus on clinical and translational medicine perspectives, and present this information in written form, via oral presentation and in the practical application of bioinformatic methodologies. This unit will provide you with an in-depth clinical and translational research knowledge base to generate cutting-edge research questions, and to develop the ability to undertake inquiry-based research.
