Overview
In this unit, you will develop and demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the healthy haematological and immune systems. You will develop an in-depth knowledge of haematological diseases, a diverse range of conditions affecting the constituents of blood and blood-forming organs including haemophilia, anaemia, thrombosis, and blood cancers such as leukemia and myeloma. You will further integrate how dysregulation of the immune system contributes to inflammation, allergy, cancer, transplantation and other diseases. Together, this will provide a contextual basis to identify patient outcomes, justify the use of appropriate therapies to respond to patient-specific problems and evaluate pathways to translate haematological and immunological research findings into clinical practice.
This unit will consist of online specialist lectures involving researchers and clinicians actively working in the haematology and immunology disciplines and eLearning resources. You will review and evaluate clinical and scientific literature in haematological and immunological diseases, with a focus on clinical and translational medicine perspectives, and present this information in written form, and via oral presentations and posters suitable for a conference presentation. This unit will provide you with an in-depth clinical and translational research knowledge base that will inform your ability to undertake inquiry-based research.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Identify the key cells, molecules
and processes that comprise the
haematopoietic and immune
systems - 2
Evaluate how the haematopoietic
and immune responses are
regulated and integrated - 3
Recognise the biological processes
and therapeutic targets involved in
disorders of the haematologic and
immune systems - 4
Evaluate appropriate tools and
techniques for therapeutic
application of disorders of the
haematologic and immune systems - 5
Critically appraise the key concepts
and conclusions from translational
haematological and immunological
research literature - 6
Develop a specific research
question grounded in a critical
review of the clinical and scientific
literature related to an
haematological or immunological
disease and its current therapies
