Overview

This specialisation has had one or more changes made to it since publication on 1 October 2020. For details of changes, please consult the 2021 Change register.

Chemical engineers transform raw materials into useful and commercial end products. This involves the research of raw materials and their properties, design and development of equipment and the evaluation of operating processes. You will acquire skills, knowledge and experience in chemistry and chemical thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, material and energy balances, as well as particle technology and process design.

Availability
Chemical engineering is listed in E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Clayton and Malaysia as an undergraduate specialisation.

Structure

Parts C. and D. Chemical engineering knowledge, application and professional practice108 credit points
You must complete the following core units. NOTE: You may choose to complete either CHM1011 or CHM1051. If you have completed either unit as a First Year technical elective, you must replace this core unit with another unit at the same level or higher from the chemical engineering technical electives list. NOTE: If you are studying E3008 Engineering and Pharmaceutical Science double degree course, you will not complete CHM1011/CHM1051. Please refer to the information below for the specific replacement unit.

Optional integrated industrial project - CHE4164 and CHE4165

12 credit points
CHE4164 and CHE4165 combine to provide a year-long industry experience project only for select students in their final year. The units are in place of the two core final year project units ENG4701 and ENG4702.

E3008 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

6 credit points
Part E. Elective study - Specialisation36 credit points

Studying the E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

36 credit points
Electives must be completed at the unit level required to satisfy the course requirements. You must complete a total of 36 credit points of engineering elective study. 12 credit points must be at levels 2 or 3 and 24 credit points must be at levels 3 and 4 or 5 from the engineering technical electives list below. If you have completed two electives in Year 1 in a non-engineering minor in a discipline from another faculty that is approved by the Faculty of Engineering, you may want to use the 12 credit points at level 2 to complete the non-engineering minor, or choose from the chemical engineering technical electives list. You are encouraged to take up the opportunity to pursue a minor in an engineering discipline that complements your engineering specialisation.

Chemical engineering technical electives

36 credit points
Studying in Clayton: You may consider other engineering technical units chosen from the engineering minors, subject to meeting the unit prerequisite and/or co-requisite rules. Studying in Malaysia: You may consider other engineering technical units with approval from the School of Engineering and subject to meeting the unit prerequisite and/or co-requisite rules. NOTE: To enrol in a level 5 unit listed below, you must obtain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65 or above at the conclusion of level 3 and be in your final year.

Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 refers to the fourth industrial revolution that is giving rise to the transformative digital industrial technologies connecting the physical world with the digital world. You are encouraged to select ECE2071, ECE2131 and TRC3500 in your electives if you are seeking to broaden your skills needed for the jobs of the future.

Studying a double degree with Chemical Engineering

The 36 credit points of specialisation technical electives normally required in the single degree have been credited towards the double degree structure and therefore not a requirement in the double degree course.
