Overview

This specialisation will prepare you to teach children and adolescents from five to 18 years of age in primary and secondary schools from Foundation to Year 12.

You will develop a knowledge and understanding of learning as a developmental continuum and will learn to employ a diverse pedagogical toolbox to meet the differentiated learning needs of students across the learning spectrum. You will actively engage with contemporary theories, concepts and practices of primary and secondary education, developing inclusive teaching and learning practices to meet a diversity of cognitive, social and emotional needs and building a repertoire of strategies to manage children's and adolescents' learning in classroom settings.

All the key elements of the primary curriculum including English and literacies, mathematics, geography, history, civics and citizenship, science, health and physical education, and the creative arts will be included. Your expertise within the key primary curriculum areas of English/literacy or mathematics /numeracy, will be enhanced by completing extended studies in one of these areas. At the secondary level Year 7 to Year 12, you will qualify as a specialist teacher (Years 10-12) in one discipline area; your unit choices within your discipline studies sequence will determine your specialist area as a secondary teacher. You will develop an understanding of adolescent learning and development in a secondary education environment including areas such as: curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation, and education and its relationship to society.

Part A. Specialist education studies90 credit points
You must complete the following units. Note: You can only choose one of EDF5852 and EDF5853. Completing EDF5852 gives a specialist sequence in English and literacy. Completing EDF5853 gives a specialist sequence in mathematics and numeracy. You must select secondary teaching method units in the specialist teaching area for which you have been approved; refer to the full list of available secondary method units.
